BIOGRAPHY

Tranesha Lockhart is an artist whose portraiture centers Black subjects in moments of deep introspection. Her work captures a full emotional spectrum: solitude, peace, anger, sadness, challenging monolithic representations and affirming the layered complexity of Black interiority.  What sets her paintings apart is the integration of relief sculpture into the canvas, often on the subject’s face or body, adding literal depth to metaphorical weight. These sculptural elements interrupt the flatness of traditional portraiture, emphasizing that these individuals cannot be flattened or simplified. The raised forms echo the psychological and emotional contours of her subjects, creating a powerful, tactile presence that confronts the viewer directly.Set against non-descript or minimal backgrounds, the figures are placed in ambiguous spaces, untethered from time or place, forcing viewers to engage not with context, but with presence. The absence of setting invites projection: each piece becomes a mirror, reflecting not only the subject’s complexity but the viewer’s assumptions.Through this layered, multidimensional approach, Tranesha Lockahart 's work becomes both portrait and statement, a reclamation of depth, dignity, and the right to be fully seen.
